For the first day of the year, I went with a lacy granny square from Jachelle Stephanie, in Järbo Molly (turquoise), using a 5.5mm hook. While that is a smaller hook than is recommended, I prefer my granny squares to be tighter.

You need to be able to do chains (ch-x), double crochet stitches (dc), single crochet stitches (sc), double crochet clusters (dcxtog), and slip stitches (sl st). I use American terms.
